'Harry Potter' books torched by priests to eradicate evil forces

In a display to condemn magic and sorcery, Catholic priests in Poland burned Harry Potter and Twilight books in a ceremony that was later shared on Facebook.

The evangelical group “SMS from Heaven Foundation” posted the photos from Sunday’s burning at the Gdansk’s Mother of Church parish, which soon sparked controversy and mockery from social media.

According to The Washington Post, items such as African masks, elephant figurines, a Hello Kitty umbrella (um, OK?) and books based on magic were “brought in by parishioners, who were encouraged by the priests to clear their homes of objects that had evil forces.”

The Facebook post was also accompanied by Bible quotes condemning magic, including a passage from Acts that states, “many of those who had practiced magic collected their books and burned them in front of everyone. So they calculated their value and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.”

You can view images from the burning ceremony below.

Majority of the comments on the photos condemn the book-burning ceremony, pointing out that a similar situation occurred in Nazi Germany in the 1930s.

More on Harry Potter

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe thinks that a franchise reboot is very likely. While speaking to IGN about his nonexistent role as the Wolverine, Radcliffe revealed that there is still life left in the beloved series — whether that be in the form of television or a remake of the films.

“I’m sure there will be some other version of it,” Radcliffe says. “I know I’m not the last Harry Potter I’m gonna see in my lifetime.”

“It will be interesting to see how long those films stay,” Radcliffe continues. “It feels like there’s a sacredness around them at the moment, but that’ll go, the shine will wear off at some point. It’ll be interesting if they reboot them and just do the films again or do a series. I’m fascinated to watch.”
