Hayley Williams talks Paramore song capturing “bulls—t of your own life”

With the end of the decade approaching, many people are ranking their top tracks and albums from the last 10 years. Paramore released two albums, Paramore and After Laughterin that time frame, so it’s no question why their name keeps popping up on so many lists, especially with their track “Hard Times.” The pop-rock group saw many changes over the last 10 years, including the departure of brothers Josh and Zac Farro in 2010. Zac eventually rejoined with Hayley Williams opening up about a track off his first album back, After Laughter, with Billboard.

Williams recently sat down with for the outlet’s essays on 100 songs that define the decade. For this, Williams discussed their After Laughter hit “Hard Times.”

Williams broke her latest social media silence to “signal” boost the interview, calling After Laughter the band’s “fav child.”

In the chat, Williams discusses how, “‘Hard Times’ was all about acknowledging the bulls–t of your own life. Accepting, moving through, sometimes defying it.”

Billboard described the track as a “Talking Heads-inspired sonic detour from the raucous pop-punk that had defined most of its career.”

During After Laughter’s press rotation, Williams was straight forward about her struggle with depression. She claims that writing is a form of therapy for her: “It shows me things about my life and emotional landscape I might otherwise overlook.”

The electric jam was the first single Paramore released from their fifth studio album. They ended every show with the track during their tour for After Laughter.

“We’d look around the crowds and see so many different kinds of people: brown skin, tan skin, pale skin, all sweaty and gorgeous,” Williams remembers. “What a gift.”

The music video is drowning in 80s vibes, with loud pastels, flashing neon lights and over-sized sunglasses. Storm clouds, complete with animated lighting bolts follow Williams throughout. You can check out the video below.
