Hayley Williams says "believe victims" amid Harvey Weinstein sentencing
Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein was officially sentenced to 23 years in prison today following a long court battle that jump-started the #MeToo movement encouraging women to speak out about their experiences with sexual abuse, and now, Paramore singer Hayley Williams is sharing her thoughts on the sentencing.
Williams expressed her thoughts on the wider issue of sexual abuse as a whole and what Weinstein’s sentencing means for the rest of society.

In a Twitter post made earlier today, Hayley Williams is expressing the need for people to believe sexual abuse victims. She also highlights that while Weinstein is facing prison time, there are countless others getting away with abuse right now.
“for every sentenced harvey there are a zillion un-sentenced harveys. BELIEVE VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ABUSE. many of them haven’t found their voice yet – it is our duty to create space for these people to heal by seeking justice and allowing their stories to provoke change. BE AN ALLY,” the post reads.

Her point was perfectly illustrated in the comments of the post with a fan sharing her and her daughter’s experience regarding sexual abuse which Williams responded to.

Weinstein spoke at his sentencing after arriving in a wheelchair with handcuffs on.

“I really feel remorse for this situation,” says Weinstein. “I feel it deeply in my heart, I will spend my time really caring and really trying to be a better person.”
“I’m not going to say these aren’t great people, I had wonderful times with these people, you know,” he continues. “It is just I’m totally confused and I think men are confused about all of these issues.”
A New York City judge sentenced him to 20 years in prison for criminal sexual act and three years for rape. Following his time served, he will be required to face five years of supervision and register as a sex offender.
“This is a first conviction, but it is not a first offense,” says Judge James Burke.
