Studio Ghibli films to hit streaming for the first time in 2020
Studio Ghibli has never been available to a streaming platform. HBO just changed that. While they may have received a lot of hate for the final season of Game of Thrones, they just hit a home run by acquiring the exclusive streaming right to the full Studio Ghibli catalog.
Films like Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke will all be hitting HBO Max when it launches in the spring of 2020.

HBO Max acquired the entire Studio Ghibli catalog with our standouts being Hayao Miyazaki‘s Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away. This is the first time these films will be available for streaming and we couldn’t be more excited.
Currently, the films are not even available for purchase on digital platforms. GKids Films acquired the theatrical distribution rights to many of the studio’s movies in the U.S. in 2011 and the home media rights in 2017. The GKids announcement tweet is below.
