Hear Lights spread holiday cheer with this laid-back “Deck The Halls” cover

Lights is spreading some holiday cheer this year in the form of her new “Deck The Halls” cover.

This week, she debuted a laid-back reimagination of the holiday classic and revealed why the cover was rejected from a Christmas movie soundtrack.

2020 has been a busy year for Lights. Back in August, she teamed up with MYTH for the Dead End remix LP. The album includes three original tracks and five remixes co-produced by both Lights and MYTH. Reimaginations of fan-favorites such as “Up We Go,” “We Were Here” and “Savage” are just a few of the songs that appear on Dead End.

Now, Lights is back with another new reimagination. This time around, she decided to take on the Christmas classic “Deck The Halls” for a holiday cover that’s apparently not too full of cheer. Lights shares that the cover was originally intended for a Christmas movie soundtrack. However, the final result wasn’t exactly what the project was looking for.

“This cover was originally for a Christmas movie soundtrack and they said it was too depressing and I said, ‘Sounds about right.’ Happy 2020 Xmas!”

For the “Deck The Halls” cover, Lights incorporated her signature sounds of laid-back guitars and synths. Along with these elements and her powerful vocals, she manages to transform the classic into something completely new. If it wasn’t for the song’s familiar “fa la la la la” throughout, Lights could’ve tricked listeners into thinking the cover was actually an original track.

“Deck The Halls” isn’t the first holiday cover to come from Lights. Last year, she took on John Lennon and Yoko Ono‘s “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” for a stripped-down ballad that lets the lyrics speak for itself.

Along with her “Deck The Halls” cover, Lights recently treated fans to her first, and only, livestream event of 2020. She teamed up with MYTH for Dead End In Joshua Tree, a continuous dance-mix Dead End set. The duo performed from day to night with a full LED production in the middle of the Joshua Tree desert.
