Band decides not to sell beanie for $100K, removes eBay listing

Earlier this week, Heart Attack Man frontman Eric Egan found himself in need of some quick cash, so he posted his beloved orange beanie on eBay.

What happened next makes sense to absolutely no one as the hat quickly rose upwards of $80,000 and 129 bids when we first covered it. Days later, Egan is informing fans he had a change of heart.

Triple Crown Records’ Heart Attack Man have had a unique approach to marketing. You may recall seeing one or more of their videos circulating through your social media feed, including this one the band created to promote one of their shows.

And yes, that’s the infamous orange beanie in question.

The video has been viewed on Twitter almost 54,000 times despite the band having just over 4,300 followers. Which brings us to the beanie…

On Feb. 18, Egan posted his infamous orange beanie on the auction site with the following (hilarious) item description:

“Hate to have to do this, but I’m strapped for cash so I am selling my orange beanie. Featured in countless photos and videos of mine all over the internet, this is not your average everyday ordinary beanie. The amount of ideas I’ve thought of while wearing this beanie is astronomical. I’ve played many shows in it. This beanie alone has left a remarkable impact on this earth. Should fit most any head size.”

The hat quickly rose from its $0.99 starting price, hitting $7,100 in an hour. Within four hours, it reached more than $69,000 and it hit $95,000 by the time the day came to a close.

At the time, AP asked Egan what he planned on doing with all this cash he replied, “I’m gonna use the money to get a haircut and tip really well.”

The listing was slated to end Feb. 25, but Egan took to social media today to state he changed his mind. It’s unclear how much the beanie actually hit before the band removed the listing, but a Twitter user shared a screenshot of it sitting at $97,300 Wednesday night.

“I just wanted to update you all on my world famous beanie,” Egan says in the video. “I’ve been thinking about it a lot. I changed my mind. I don’t want to sell my beanie anymore. This is a lot of money that I’m walking away from, but you know what? There’s some things in life that you can’t put a price tag on, and my beanie is one of them.”

Whether or not this was all just a master marketing plan remains to be seen. However, if you still really want a Heart Attack Man-approved beanie, the band launched a preorder for a reprint in their webstore for just $25.

In 2017, Heart Attack Man dropped their full-length The Manson Family. Last year, the band released a single, “Boring,” and a split with McCafferty. The band also began teasing new tunes, but you can check their music out here.
