Here’s how ‘The Grinch’ caused Taylor Momsen to pursue a career in music

Christmas Eve is only ten days away which means many of us have been binge-watching some holiday classics including Home Alone, The Santa Clause and The Grinch. Now, Taylor Momsen has finally opened up about her time as Cindy Lou Who in 2000’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

In a new rare interview, Momsen reveals how being in the Christmas classic eventually inspired her to pursue a career in music.

Over a decade ago, Momsen forged a career in rock music with the Pretty Reckless and their hit single “Make Me Wanna Die.” Since then, the Pretty Reckless have gone on to release various singles and three full-length albums.

As it turns out, however, it was Momsen’s time on the set of The Grinch that eventually inspired her to pursue music. Momsen tells Today that working in a recording studio for the film greatly influenced her.

“The thing that I remember the most that probably resonated with me to this day as an adult was the first time that I went into a recording studio and got to work with the amazing James Horner,” she says. “I’ll never forget walking into this beautiful studio, with this immaculate console in front of me, and putting headphones on and singing into a microphone for the first time, singing ‘Where Are You Christmas.'”

Ultimately, it was during that moment Momsen realized she wanted to pursue music.

“That was such an impactful moment in my life because it made me go, ‘I wanna make music for the rest of my life. I love being in a recording studio.'”

In fact, How The Grinch Stole Christmas technically includes Momsen’s first music video.

“I’m in my bedroom singing ‘Where Are You Christmas’ with the flashlight,” she says. “I mean, essentially, that was my first music video. So I always get a kick out of that. And I remember thinking that was a really fun scene to film.”

So, it looks like we partly have The Grinch to thank for all of the Pretty Reckless’ music. Last month, we finally learned that the wait for new music from the rock band is almost over. The Pretty Reckless have confirmed that their new album Death By Rock And Roll is officially arriving on Feb. 12, 2021.

The Pretty Reckless have already offered a few tastes of the new album. Back in May, they unleashed the album’s title track which was soon followed up by an illustrated lyric video. More recently, they debuted the new song “Broomsticks” just in time for Halloween as well as “25.”

Along with these songs, Death By Rock And Roll features a few incredible collaborations. Soundgarden‘s Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron join the band on “Only Love Can Save Me Now” while Rage Against The Machine‘s Tom Morello appears on “And So It Went.”

Death By Rock And Roll arrives on Feb. 12, 2021 through Fearless Records and pre-orders are available here. Taylor Momsen’s full interview talking about How The Grinch Stole Christmas is available to stream below.
