Here's why you'll probably never hear Dave Grohl sing a Nirvana song
Dave Grohl is taking a brief break from talking about the highly-anticipated release of Foo Fighters‘ new album Medicine At Midnight to open up about his time in Nirvana.
In a new interview, Grohl reveals that he often dreams about performing with Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. As well, he shares why he will never sing a Nirvana song.

2021 is set to be a big year for Dave Grohl. Next month, Foo Fighters are releasing their 10th studio album Medicine At Midnight. The album, which includes the new songs “Shame Shame” and “No Son Of Mine,” marks Foo Fighters’ 25th anniversary as a band.
For now, Grohl is taking a brief break from talking about Medicine At Midnight to open up about his days in Nirvana. In a new interview with Classic Rock, Grohl details his early days in Washington state jamming with Cobain and Novoselic.
“When I first joined the band it was so much fun,” he recalls. “I lived on the couch in Kurt’s living room, we rehearsed in a barn, we set up our gear and played those songs and people bounced around and got hot and sweaty. I really loved the connection and the appreciation that Nirvana’s audience had with the band.”

Despite the amount of time that has passed, Grohl still has no plans to ever sing a Nirvana song. Why? Well, he just isn’t comfortable taking over on a song originally sang by Cobain.
“I wouldn’t feel comfortable singing a song that Kurt sang,” he says. “I feel perfectly at home playing those songs on the drums. And I love playing them with Krist and Pat [Smear] and another vocalist.”
These days, Grohl finds himself having vivid dreams about performing onstage with Nirvana again. In particular, he dreams about the trio waiting to play for an empty area. For Grohl, these dreams are a reminder of the time that has passed and the music Cobain created before his death.

“I still have dreams that we’re in Nirvana, that we’re still a band,” he says. “I still dream there’s any empty arena waiting for us to play. But I don’t sit down at home and run through “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by myself. It’s just a reminder that the person who is responsible for those beautiful songs is no longer with us. It’s bittersweet.”
Similarly, Novoselic also dreams about Nirvana. Back in 2014, he revealed to the Young Turks that he often sees Cobain in his dreams.
“I have dreams about Kurt,” he said. “I’m so happy to see him in a dream, like, ‘Oh my god, it’s so good to see you.’ Then we’re always like, ‘Okay, let’s go play.’ We’re always going to go play music, so there’s some kind of connection there, which is good. That’s what it’s all about.”
Last month, Nirvana fans were hit with a true ’80s throwback. Photographer Richard Davis rediscovered some old photos from one of Nirvana’s first-ever gigs in the U.K. The photos depict the chaotic club crowds the trio played in front of before skyrocketing to success in the 1990s.
As well, Billy Corgan recently earned mixed reactions after he compared Lil Peep to Kurt Cobain. In a recent interview, the Smashing Pumpkins frontman said that the late rapper is the Kurt Cobain of this generation.
