‘The Hunger Games’ reveal prequel book and it's already getting a movie

It’s been almost four years since the Hunger Games finale, Mockingjay Part 2, hit the big screen, and now it’s time to return to Panem.

Not only will fans of the series be getting a new film, but a novel that the movie will be based on.

Scholastic shared an initial image of a possible cover for the book with the name “Untitled Panem Novel,” along with a release date of May 19, 2020.

The book will be based 64 years before the original series takes place, with series author Suzanne Collins looking to describe humanity’s relationship with survival.

“With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are, and what we perceive is required for our survival,” she says in a statement. “The reconstruction period 10 years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days, as the country of Panem struggles back to its feet, provides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views of humanity.”

Right on the heels of the novel’s announcement was the news of a corresponding motion picture based on the prequel.

Lionsgate chairman Joe Drake expressed his excitement for the new film in a statement today, assuring fans that Collins will be a part of the film’s production.

“As the proud home of the Hunger Games movies, we can hardly wait for Suzanne’s next book to be published,” Drake says. “We’ve been communicating with her during the writing process and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie.”
