Ice Nine Kills release 'Shining'-inspired song featuring Sam Kubrick—listen

Back in March, Ice Nine Kills asked the fans which novel should close the chapter (pun intended) of their newest album, Every Trick In The Book. It was down between Psycho and The Shining, and the fans picked Stephen King’s classic The Shining.

We were already psyched to hear this killer song, but it got even cooler as it was revealed that Stanley Kubrick’s grandson Sam Kubrick provides guest vocals. Kubrick is the vocalist/guitarist for London-based metal band Shields.

“On our tour of the UK last fall, we became great friends with his band Shields, whose technical prowess and dynamic songwriting blew us away. Being a big fan of their band and Sam’s vocals, we knew his inclusion on the song would provide a strong connection to the story’s legacy,” said vocalist Spencer Charnas. “His performance undeniably adds a layer and depth to the composition that is truly chill inducing.”

It turns out the fans definitely made the right decision picking The Shining over Psycho as May 23 marked the 37th year anniversary of the film adaptation, while this year is also 40th year anniversary of the original novel written by Stephen King. The video was directed by John Howe, who has previously worked with Dance Gavin Dance.

“Being huge fans of not only the novel, but also of Stanley Kubrick’s brilliant film adaptation, we knew in order for the song to work we would need to capture the unnerving isolation and traumatizing scenes of horror that occurred on those 447 pages and 144 minutes of film,” said Charnas.
