During the first week of December, the United States saw a massive increase in vinyl record sales. According to Billboard, 1.253 million were sold in the week ending on Dec. 3. Part of the reason for the uptick in sales was due to Record Store Day‘s Black Friday event where rare vinyl pressings were available in limited quantities.

My Chemical Romance‘s Life On The Murder Scene was available in an exclusive vinyl pressing that quickly sold out on Black Friday. In fact, the sales of the vinyl may be why Life On The Murder Scene recently re-entered the Billboard 200.

Now, it looks like people didn’t stop shopping for vinyl on Black Friday. According to Billboard, vinyl records sales have surged again just before the Christmas holiday. For the week ending on Dec. 17, sales were up 9 percent from the previous week with a staggering 1.445 million vinyl sold.

The latest feat means vinyl has had its biggest week since Nielsen Music/MRC Data began electronically tracking music sales in 1991. Unsurprisingly, one particular vinyl sold more copies than any other during this time period.

Taylor Swift‘s folklore sold 23,000 vinyl copies, an increase of 543 percent. Billboard goes on to say that the uptick in folklore vinyl sales is likely due to the extensive advertising Swift has been doing on her website. As well, the numerous color variants and artwork available possibly led individuals to buy more than just one copy.

Billboard predicts that vinyl sales could hit another record high in the week ending on Dec. 24. This is due to the fact that this time period captures the full seven shopping days leading up to Christmas Day.

Selena Gomez, 5 Seconds Of Summer, Lady Gaga and the 1975 are among the artists who had some of the highest-selling cassette tape releases in 2020.
