Jimmy Eat World‘s new album Surviving released everywhere today and the band also dropped a new video for the song “555.” It’s a bit of a different feel than we’re used to from the band and it definitely needs to be seen to be believed.
The video is a science-fiction post-apocalyptic nightmare filled with clones and an evil galactic master played by Jimmy Eat World frontman Jim Adkins. Check it out below.
The song “555” is not a pop-punk party banger of old, but shows more of a personal side. It’s about resisting accepted norms but also the fallout that can cause.
“I’ve always liked the Rick Springfield video for ‘Bop ‘Till You Drop’. A reptilian overlord managing his minions gets overthrown by his workforce.” Adkins says when speaking of “555”.
“He’s kind of trying to keep them in line, but one guy breaks into song and mass rebellion ensues. From the overlord’s perspective, that day was a pretty bad day. I always thought that was funny. So ‘555’ sees me cast as a galactic evil master, overseeing an army of cloned species doing my bidding – this is the only life they know, joining me in song in this post-apocalyptic dystopia.”
If that has piqued your interest enough, watch the video below.
Its definitely giving us some Battlefield Earth vibes, or even CKY‘s “Inhuman Creation Station” video from Infiltrate•Destroy•Rebuild without the awesome claymation. Regardless, the song hits on those long drives.
Talking about Surviving, Adkins feels a weight off his shoulders. “In the past, it would have driven me nuts because I had to control everything.” Adkins relays. “But now it’s just such a weight off. I don’t actually have to control anything. I can just be me now, I guess.
That certainly explains the curveball of “555” and its video.
