Johnny Depp’s role in the ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ saga is still unclear

Disney is working on a reboot of the Pirates Of The Caribbean series but the film’s producer isn’t sure what Johnny Depp‘s involvement will look like.

According to Collider, Jerry Bruckheimer told them in an interview that he’s unsure what Depp’s role is going to be and that we’ll have to wait and see.

In 2018, talks of a reboot of the franchise were stirring with the creative minds behind the first two Deadpool films rumored to be involved.

A few months later though, they abandoned ship leaving the film without a writing team.

Then, last fall it was revealed that one of the original film’s writers Ted Elliott and Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin were working on the script.

In October 2018, the Daily Mail reported that Depp’s involvement may be coming to an end though. Stuart Beattie, who wrote the first film and receives character credits, revealed the news to them.

“I think he’s had a great run,” Beattie tells the Daily Mail. “Obviously, he’s made that character his own, and it’s become the character he’s most famous for now.

“And kids all over the world love him as that character so I think it’s been great for him, it’s been great for us, so I’m just very, very happy about it.”

At the time, it could have been due to the previous filming being the lowest grossing of the franchise.

Since then, speculation has also gone around that Johnny Depp could have been dropped from the franchise over abuse allegations against his ex-wife Amber Heard. Heard penned an op-ed in 2018 detailing abusive behaviour from Depp that turned out to not be as one sided as many initially believed.

Now, Depp’s involvement is still unclear but we’re finding out a bit of news about the film.

Bruckheimer reveals they’re currently working on a draft of the film and hopes to hand it over to Disney soon.

On top of that, he says he’s not sure what Johnny Depp’s role will be but says we’re going to have to wait to see.

“We’re working on a draft right now and hopefully we’ll get it shortly and give it to Disney and hopefully they’ll like it,” Bruckheimer says. “We don’t know. We’ve been working on it for a little bit.”

“The one we’re developing right now, we’re not sure quite what Johnny’s role is going to be,” Bruckheimer says. “So, we’re going to have to see.”

Speculation about what the film will be focusing on leads to the character Redd. The character was first introduced as part of the Disneyland attraction replacing a problematic part of the set.

Formerly, it depicted a redhead woman being auctioned off who was restructured as Redd and given a role as one of the pirates.
