It looks like we may be seeing Johnny Depp back on screen very soon.
Last month, we learned that Warner Bros. asked Depp to step down from his role as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The news arrived shortly after Depp lost a libel case against the U.K.-based tabloid The Sun over a 2018 article alleging he was a “wife beater.”
Although Depp plans to appeal the ruling, we learned last week that Warner Bros. have already recast him in Fantastic Beasts 3. After numerous rumors, the company confirmed that Mads Mikkelsen will be portraying Grindelwald going forward. The franchise’s star Eddie Redmayne confirmed in September that filming for Fantastic Beasts 3 has resumed amid coronavirus delays.
Even though Depp is no longer part of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, it looks like we may see him onscreen again soon. According to Small Screen, Depp is in the running to play Gomez Addams in Tim Burton’s TV adaptation of The Addams Family.
According to one of Small Screen‘s sources, The Addams Family TV show will most likely debut on Netflix. As well, Burton believes Depp is a great fit for the role.
“It’s full steam ahead on Netflix’s The Addams Family,” the source says. “Tim Burton wants Johnny Depp to play Gomez Addams. He thinks he would do the role justice.”
We first learned about Burton’s plans back in October. Burton’s TV adaptation of The Addams Family will mark his first major live-action TV series. However, if you are hoping to see The Addams Family are you remember them, think again.
According to Deadline, sources say that the new series will be set in present times as the Addams Family deals with modern life. As well, the television show will reportedly be told exclusively through the perspective of Wednesday Addams.
Just like Small Screen‘s source, Deadline also reported that Netflix is the top contender to earn the streaming rights to the new project. However, nothing has been confirmed at this time.
Burton’s TV adaptation wouldn’t be the first for The Addams Family. The Addams Family‘s story has been retold various times over the years. The fictional household was first created by American cartoonist Charles Addams in 1938. However, the story has had various screen adaptations over the years including two other live-action television series. More recently, the Addams Family was made into an animated movie that has a sequel arriving in 2021.
Of course, Depp and Burton are a match made in cinematic heaven. The duo has worked together on various projects over the years including Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Dark Shadows, Sleepy Hollow and Corpse Bride. As long time collaborators, it’s really no surprise that the director may be considered Depp for the role of Gomez Addams.
Naturally, both The Addams Family fans and Johnny Depp supporters are sharing their thoughts on the report.
