'Joker' trailer is a twisted and terrifying nightmare we can't escape

Fans were given a first look at what was to come for the forthcoming Joker film after director Todd Phillips dropped a daring first poster for the film. The poster showed Joaquin Phoenix’s take on the iconic villain while donning the classic Joker makeup. We were also promised a full trailer release today, and fortunately, Phillips held true to his promise.

Check out the terrifying trailer below.

The dark and chilling trailer was released earlier this morning after making its debut at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

The video teaser shows Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck unsuccessfully attempting to find work as a stand-up comedic clown. It gives a more human-like and sympathetic take on the DC character that has left fans on the edge of their seats wanting more.

The background music is Nat King Cole’s “Smile,” setting the perfect tone and mood for the film.

Check out the trailer, complete with Joker’s manic laugh, below.

As the movie’s release draws near, Phillips dropped the first poster for the forthcoming villain film yesterday.

A few months ago, we got our first look at Phoenix’s portrayal. However, the look in question wasn’t at all what fans expected. Instead of showing the Joker off in his iconic makeup, Phillips shook things up by teasing his “normal” persona, Arthur.

It wasn’t long before Phillips revealed Phoenix sporting the look we have all come to know and love.

Meant to serve as an origin story, the DC Comics film is set to show a gritty “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale,” per a movie premise published by Vulture.

Joker will hit theaters Oct. 4.
