Jonas Brothers talk MxPx gigs, “punching people in the face” in mosh pits

The Jonas Brothers are in the midst of their major comeback, following the release of their first single in 6 years, “Sucker.”

The band hit Hot Ones where they chatted about growing up in New Jersey and throwing down in the mosh pit at MxPx, Slick Shoes and more.

The revelation isn’t too surprising. While they were signed to Disney’s Hollywood Records in 2007 and become well-known via Camp Rock, the band definitely had some pop-punk roots.

The Jonas Brothers have listed Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, Switchfoot and MxPx as influences in the past. In fact, in 2005, Nick almost got arrested while attending the Nintendo Fusion Tour (featuring FOB, P!ATD and Motion City Soundtrack) with his bros. A then 13-year-old Nick, who is a diabetic, was giving himself insulin when security mistook it for illegal drugs.

Kevin Jonas specifically is a huge MxPx fan, having opened up about the band in the past on an episode of MTV’s When I Was 17. There, he revealed that a certain punk band served as the inspiration for him wanting to become a musician.

“So, when I was 17, I went to pretty much my first show on my own, which was a MxPx show. The ticket was $15. That was fantastic. I was like, ‘I can afford that.’ MxPx [are] a pop-punk band. I got their tape from my uncle a long time ago.”

He later continued on the subject, claiming, ”That album really stayed with me. Even though [the Jonas Brothers’] sound is not necessarily there, it definitely had some influences on who I am as a guitarist.”

The Jonas Brothers on Hot Ones

Now, the Jonas Brothers are opening up on their “scene kids” roots yet again on internet show Hot Ones. For those unfamiliar with the show, the series has musicians, actors, sports figures and more come in to eat wings and answer questions.

As the wings get hotter, so do the questions. If the band makes it through to the end (where they can choose to partake in “the last dab”), they get the opportunity to self-promote.

In this episode, Hot Ones host Sean Evans asks the JoBros what they remember about their “short-lived punk-rock phase.”

Nick jokes it was “epic” to which Kevin followed up with “so extreme.” However, Kevin went on to elaborate a bit more on their phase.

“We were like scene kids from Jersey at one point. We were going to see MxPx and Slick Shoes, you know, all of those bands—punching people in the face in the mosh pit. That kind of thing.”

“Kevin did a backflip in a mosh pit twice,” Joe adds. “And hit the same guy in the nuts twice. I watched Kevin, and I’m like, ‘He’s going to get beat up.’ Now, this guy has every right to fight him. The guy was still like, you know in a mosh, they’re like, ‘It’s all good.’ I’m like, Kevin deserves to get his ass kicked right now.”
