Jordan Peele's 'Us' horrified audiences in the very best way

Jordan Peele unveiled the follow-up to his horror-filled classic Get Out as the opening movie at SXSW. Fans were eager to see if Peele’s Us would live up to the hype of his first film, praying that it would not fall victim to the dreaded sophomore slump of most sequels. Fortunately, this film not only delivered, but it evidently scared the living hell out of EVERYONE.

Peele took the stage at South by Southwest to debut his new horror film, with fans eagerly awaiting to see if it lived up to the hype.

“What if I showed four episodes of ‘This Is Us’ in a row, with no explanation?” Peele asked as he took the stage.

Someone’s got jokes.

Anticipation has been high after Us dropped an official trailer back in December with the creepy “I Got 5 On It” song…

But is Us everything we hope it will be?

According to moviegoers at SXSW. It is. It really, really is.

The NY Times reports that the film mixed humor and chills, sending the audience into laughter one moment and screams the next.

We’re so ready.

Peele held a Q&A after the film, stating “My favorite thing is the idea that people will leave ready to have a conversation with whoever they’re with.” He continues, “I also wanted to design a film that’s very personal for every individual.”

When asked what the film was about, Peele replied:

“This movie is about this country, and when I decided to write this movie, I was stricken with the fact that we are in a time where we fear the other: whether it is the mysterious invader that we think is going to come and kill us and take our jobs, or the faction that we don’t live near that voted a different way than us. We’re all about pointing the finger, and I wanted to suggest that maybe the monster we really need to look at has our face. Maybe the evil is us.”

Critics at the event have given the movie rave reviews, with The Hollywood Reporter claiming, “Maybe every happy ending is somebody else’s catastrophe, and therefore, no horror film is ever really over.”

On top of its SXSW debut, Peele held three other screenings in New York, LA, and Atlanta for black media, influencers, fans, and celebrities, allowing them to be among the first to view the film.
