Kanye pulled from Coachella after they refused to build him a giant dome

Oh how we wish this were a Hard Times article.

Earlier this month it was revealed that Kanye West was set to headline the year’s Coachella. After the rapper and the festival couldn’t seem to come to an agreement in regards to stage setup, West dropped from the lineup.

Details into the disagreement have finally been revealed, and it seems that West dropped from the festival after they refused to build him a giant dome in the middle of the festival grounds.

No, we’re not kidding.

According to a report from TMZ earlier this month, West decided against performing at this year’s festival due to the festival’s 40×60 foot stage setup.

As noted in the report, the reason for West deciding to leave was due to the “artistically limiting” size of the stage.

A source that’s close to the rapper spoke to TMZ about the situation, where they shared that: “These 40×60 stages are so archaic. It’s the same type of stage on which Shakespeare’s works were performed hundreds of years ago.”

Now, in a recent exclusive with Billboard, it was revealed that West had sprung a last-minute stage design on Coachella co-founder Paul Tollett.

It seems that Kanye wasn’t feeling Coachella’s main stage and instead requested a custom-built dome that would be placed directly in the center of the festival’s grounds.

West would play in the center of the dome with an in-the-round format. The dome would be tricked out with high tech production and immersive video.

Senior executives as well as Goldenvoice explained to West that building such a stage was not doable in four months time. The request would also require AEG to completely rearrange the festival grounds and move a large section of portable bathrooms.

According to Billboard, “West became irritated, declaring that he was an artist with a creative vision who shouldn’t be spending his time talking about port-a-potties.”

A source told Billboard that the rapper became irritated with the call, stating it was Goldenvoice’s responsibility to deal with the bathrooms. He then hung up the phone abruptly.

Tollett and Goldenvoice switched gears that same day, reaching out to Scooter Braun in regards to bringing in a replacement for West.

Before the day was over, Ariana Grande had replaced Kanye West in Coachella’s lineup.

Apparently Coachella was not the first festival to deny West’s custom-dome request. It seems the rapper was close to snagging the headliner spot at Governor’s Ball in NY until his dome request caused him to lose that spot as well.
