Kat Cunning’s “Boys” is filled with love, acceptance and support—listen

Non-binary artist and actor Kat Cunning has released their latest track, “Boys.” The new single expresses pride for the LGBTQIA+ community and offers a source of support for those who live beyond binaries and gender restrictions. 

The new song is a personal and powerful story highlighting one of Cunning’s friends who transitioned. The track features lyrics such as, “Unzip your skin, and let me in” as well as the repetition of lyrics, “You beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy” that won’t allow the listener to forget their true beauty.

Cunning first announced the track on Twitter with a tweet that read, “Unzip your skin and let me in “Boys” – Out May 28th!”

They then teased their fans with a tweet that read, “I don’t think you’re ready to meet the #beautifulboys… Drop a [seeing eye glass emoji] if you SEE ur dad and if you’re LOOKING for my single BOYS that finally drops at midnight!!”

The upbeat and soulful song is filled with unadulterated love and acceptance from beginning to end. “Boys” encourages the celebration of new beginnings offered to those who are transitioning, urging the listener to be excited rather than afraid. It is an incredible example of how to musically show support and allyship with those in the LGBTQIA+ community.

“Boys” is Cunning’s third track released this year, coming after “Could Be Good” and “Confident.” Both singles were dropped with accompanying music videos. 

The video for “Could Be Good” is “a portrait of the optimism and simplicity that kept life rich for me this crazy past year,” Cunning says. “There was a lot of darkness in 2020, but this song is a snapshot of the light.” You can watch the music video below.

Cunning’s video features black and white snapshots of home videos. The visual also shows Cunning and their partner singing in the car, dancing on the beach and riding horses in the trees, among other romantic activities.

The words that go along with the images are equally as lovely, with lyrics such as, “Won’t say I’m falling but I could/‘Cause who knows? It could be good.” Cunning highlights the beauty in the simple moments of being with someone you love.

Cunning also worked with PVRIS’ Lynn Gunn to remix “Supernova (tigers blud)” earlier this year. Cunning was “immediately into it” according to an interview with Alternative Press. 

“The beat in the chorus is exactly what I couldn’t put my finger on the song needing,” says Cunning. “And I started dancing to it right away. I don’t usually love remixes, but this is a really cool opportunity for the fans to see another authentic side of the song that I really stand by.”
