KISS fan gets refund after saying band lip-synced set, radio host alleges

A KISS fan was allegedly refunded after accusing guitarist Paul Stanley of lip-synching one of their tracks during a live show.

The story came to light on a SiriusXM broadcast of Trunk Nation.

It started when a listener named Arch Hall wrote the station to “find out how many ticket buyers have requested a refund after terrible performances.”

Then, they focused on KISS specifically.

With bands like KISS for example, Paul Stanley’s atrocious vocal performances would seriously upset me if I paid a substantial amount for a ticket and sit through some of the things I’ve seen uploaded to YouTube,” he said, according to a transcript of the story by Alternative Nation.

Host Eddie Trunk responded about the person specifically bringing up KISS in the argument.

You’ve singled out KISS here but as far as what’s going on there it’s well documented and it’s all over YouTube,” he said.

“Constant examples and proof that Paul is singing to a track. He has a track assisting him in his live performance. All you gotta do is Google that, YouTube that and there’s a million — eventually they pull these videos down because they’re so incriminating but it’s been proven a thousand times online. So, he’s not gonna sound all that bad on this tour because he’s using a track!

Then, Trunk continued with the story about the KISS fan who got the refund. He said he knows a person who spent $1,000 on four KISS tickets in Boston. He had never seen the band before, and saw videos of Stanley lip syncing.

“(The person) went to Ticketmaster and said, ‘I paid for live, this is not fully live. I want a refund,’” he said. “Twenty-four hours later, Ticketmaster issued the refund. That is interesting. This person sent me an email about it, this is a guy who is also in the business so this is not just a fan who is just trying to stir the pot.”

This is not the first time the band has been accused of this. As Trunk stated, there are many YouTube videos making this accusation.

Also previously, Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx seemingly called out the band earlier this year for using backing tracks.

Gene Simmons has expressed in the past a hard stance against the use of backing tracks. In a 2015 interview with news.com.au, the bassist/vocalist cited a handful of bands, not including Mötley Crüe, as the only ones left who don’t rely on the aid of electronics for live shows.

“I have a problem when you charge $100 to see a live show and the artist uses backing tracks,” Simmons says. “It’s like the ingredients in food. If the first ingredient on the label is sugar, that’s at least honest. It should be on every ticket—you’re paying $100, 30 to 50 per cent of the show is [on] backing tracks, and they’ll sing sometimes, sometimes they’ll lip sync. At least be honest. It’s not about backing tracks; it’s about dishonesty.”

Other KISS news

A few days ago, Stanley fell victim to a technical mishap during the band’s show in Mexico that forced Stanely to abandon his zip-line stunt during “Love Gun.”

A fan caught footage of the attempt, showing a member of the crew trying to assist Stanely only for him to soon give up on the zip-line.

KISS are currently on their farewell tour. Recently Stanley revealed what song the band would play as their final encore song on the last stop of the tour.

Stanley revealed in an interview with Australia’s “Sunday Night” that the last song they’d ever do live is “Rock and Roll All Nite and Party Every Day.”

“That is the rock anthem that connects the world. It was the start of other people coming up with anthems,” he said. “They didn’t really exist, per se. So, ‘Rock and Roll All Nite and Party Every Day,’ that’s a song that just connects with people on all different levels.”
