Korn's Jonathan Davis thinks this was the last wave of "real rock bands"
Jonathan Davis doesn’t think we’ll see any more “big, real rock bands” in the future.
The Korn frontman believes his own band is part of the last batch of rock groups that really made it.
Davis is joining a long list of musicians who think rock is basically dead. Similar statements have been shared by the likes of KISS’ Gene Simmons and Ghost’s Tobias Forge.
The musician is, however, sharing a little more insight on when he thinks rock died. Or better, what was the last wave of successful bands of the genre. He shared his thoughts about the matter during an interview with the Jasta Show, which you can hear in full below.
For Davis, the last batch of bands that really made it included Korn and groups from the same era, such as Deftones and Limp Bizkit.
The insight came after a question from the interviewer about how much impact newer rock groups can have right now, how much they can help each other out and cross-over to other genres.
“No, not to the same caliber…” Davis says. “I’ve always said this last batch—Korn, Deftones, Bizkit, all those bands from that time—was the last guard of that time of the big, real rock bands.”
“That time has come and gone. No one’s ever gonna do it like we ever did. No one’s ever gonna have that experience. It was larger than life,” he continues.
“I’m not trying to be arrogant or nothing, but it was us against them, us against the pop bands, us against the Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys, and then we were so embraced by the hip-hop community,” Davis explains. “We did stuff with Cube, we did stuff with Dre and Snoop. At that time, that crossover… I haven’t seen that, and I don’t think I’ll see it again.”

Korn’s upcoming album
Korn fans have been (im)paintently waiting for the group to release their 13th album, and it sounds like we’re getting closer each day.
The group’s new release is “very groove-oriented” according to what Davis shared with DOMkast.
“It’s going great. We’re recording in Nashville, and I’m gonna start working on some stuff when I get home. And when it’s done, it’s done,” he said. “It’s not like records in the past. We’re taking our time on this one. And the stuff that I’ve heard that we’re recording is very groove-oriented, it’s very intense. It’s gonna be a good record. I’m really excited to get home and start singing on it.”
It was recently reported that the band’s guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer and Brian “Head” Welch had started writing new material for Korn’s forthcoming 13th album, and according to the band’s frontman Jonathan Davis, the new material is coming along.
“I’ve listened to a bunch of stuff. There’s been really good ideas, really cool grooves. It really doesn’t start taking place until I get there and glue all the shit together with the arrangements and put my vocals on it.
He continued on to say:
“But they’re working with different producers and we’re gonna do the record and we’ll see – I’m really excited for it. It doesn’t suck, I know that. I’m not going, ‘Go back, please.’ I’m more impressed on these than I was with Serenity Of Suffering, so…”
We’re not entirely sure when the new Korn album will be making its way to music fans, we do know it most likely will come later in the year.
Korn’s drummer Ray Luzier recently had to clarify past remarks on the album’s release, where he had to let fans know that no release date for the album has been set, despite past comments.
