Kurt Cobain guitar theft suit leads to Frances Bean ex’s psych evaluation

In May 2018, Frances Bean Cobain’s ex-husband Isaiah Silva sued several people who he believed broke into his home to steal Kurt Cobain’s famous acoustic guitar and kill him.

Courtney Love, Love’s manager Sam Lutfi and actor Ross Butler (Riverdale, 13 Reasons Why) were just a few of the many individuals accused of conspiring against him.

Silva claims the group  orchestrated a plot involving attempted murder, false imprisonment and sexual assault in order to obtain Kurt’s iconic guitar, according to NME.

According to celebrity news site The Blast, Butler requested to be exempt from the lawsuit filed by Silva. In June 2016, Silva claimed Lutfi, with the help of two unidentified men, burglarized his home, attempted to murder him and impersonated police in order to enter the home.

Later court documents revealed that Butler was at Silva’s home on the night he claims these events occurred.

Lutfi and Butler arrived at Silva’s home in a car driven by Yan Yukhtman, another person named in the lawsuit. Lutfi claimed he was receiving “troubling text messages” from Frances and Silva, so he went to check on the couple June 2, 2016.

When Butler saw the house, he noticed that the windows were covered, and no one responded to knocks on the door. Lutfi went inside the house, and it is unknown if he used force to enter.

Upward of 10 minutes later, the house alarm went off, which caught Butler’s attention. Butler went into the house where he says he was “greeted calmly and amicably by Silva.”

Butler describes the house as “messy” with a “bad odor.” Additionally, he notes that Silva looked frail and emaciated. He stayed in the house while Silva and Lutfi had a conversation.

Butler noticed another person, nicknamed Mr. Munsey, in the house who made an exit. Silva, Lutfi and Butler left the premises as well. Before the car could leave the driveway, Munsey told everyone he had called the police. Officers arrived at the scene and asked questions.

Butler denies all allegations in the lawsuit and claims he also had no communication with Love. He’s also demanding all claims against him be dismissed.

“I never entered into a conspiracy or otherwise agreed to commit any crime against Silva,” Butler alleges. “I never conspired with anyone else to murder or kidnap Silva…or take possession of a guitar that Silva claims Ms. Cobain gave to him as a gift.”

Now, Silva is reportedly going under psychiatric evaluation to determine his mental health, according to TMZ. It’s reported that the defendants requested the evaluation, which takes place today. In those evaluations, doctors ask a variety of questions about the alleged claims and how it affects him in the present-day. They also ask a series of background questions unrelated to the events in the 7 hour evaluation.

The Kurt Cobain guitar in question is1959 Martin D-18E acoustic guitar. It is best known as being the one he played on MTV Unplugged. It became a legal issue between Silva and Frances during their divorce. In a 2016 TMZ interview, Love described the instrument as a “treasured heirloom of the family.”

Silva ultimately won the multi-million dollar item in a settlement.
