Kurt Cobain 'MTV Unplugged' cardigan marks most expensive sweater sold

Earlier this month, we learned the iconic, olive-green cardigan Kurt Coban wore during Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance was hitting the auction block once again.

Not only did the cardigan sell for an impressive amount of money, but it set the record for the most-expensive sweater ever sold at an auction.

Julien’s Auctions held their two-day event on Friday and Saturday featuring items from Cobain, Madonna, Queen, Michael Jackson, Janis Joplin and many more.

One of the most anticipated and talked about items on the list was Cobain’s sweater, which was previously purchased in November 2015.

The auction marks the second time in four years that the never-been-washed sweater has gone up for sale.

“It’s very important that we don’t wash it,” Darren Julien of Julien’s Auctions tells Rolling Stone. “The stains are still there. There’s even cigarette burns that you can see on the sweater.”

“Rock & roll memorabilia has become an investment,” Julien explains. “It’s not just a collector’s market — it’s an investor’s market. The person that bought the sweater in 2015 bought it as an investment. Now, because we’ve been getting record prices for Kurt Cobain, people are starting to sell it. We anticipate that it will sell for more than double. I call it the new fine art market. People are investing more and more in pop culture, especially rock & roll. It’s a way to diversify their portfolios.”

Over the weekend, Cobain’s sweater ended up selling for $334,000, exceeding the estimated $200,000-$300,000.

According to Julien’s Auctions, it now holds the title for the most expensive sweater ever sold in an auction.

The cardigan first sold at auction in 2015 for $137,000.

Also up for sale was Kurt Cobain’s left-handed teal Fender Mustang, estimated to reach $300,000-$500,000 with a starting bid of $75,000.

The guitar ended up selling for a total of $340,000.

Both items are accompanied by a handwritten letter from Courtney Love.
