Bobby Beausoleil, an inmate serving a life sentence in the California state prison system, has revealed that two of his songs are being used in the Lady Gaga documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two. Beausoleil’s sentence is for the first-degree murder of music teacher Gary Hinman in 1969. Additionally, Beausoleil was a follower of Charles Manson.
While Beausoleil was a follower of the cult leader, he was not an official part of the “family.” Aside from being commonly associated with Manson, Beausoleil is also known for his musicianship.
In a story with Complex, transcripts revealed Beausoleil’s music endeavors were separate from his association with Manson. Additionally, Beausoleil says that Gaga: Five Foot Two sampled his work.
“The Lady Gaga documentary used a portion of it, and it has been used in other films,” Beausoleil says. “It is respected on its own merits as art. I think it is important to try to see it as something that is not representative of something that is related to Manson.”
According to Complex, Beausoleil’s story checks out. The samples were taken from his project, Lucifer Rising.
directed by Chris Moukarbel, the documentary was released in September 2017. At the time of press, it is unknown whether or not Gaga approved of the soundtrack choices.
