Leonardo DiCaprio turned down roles as Anakin Skywalker, Spiderman

Five time Oscar nominee and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio turned down multiple blockbuster roles in the past, including Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels.

In a 2010 interview with ShortList, DiCaprio spoke about how he felt he wasn’t ready for the galactic role. His sentiment was the same towards Spiderman in the James Cameron adaptations and Robin in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever, two roles DiCaprio also potentially filled.

“Joel Schumacher is a very talented director, but I don’t think I was ready for anything like that,” DiCaprio says in the interview. “I did have a meeting with George Lucas about that as well, yes… same scenario.”

“Er, that was another one of those situations, similar to Robin, where I didn’t feel ready to put on that suit yet. They got in touch with me,” DiCaprio says about Spiderman.

Skywalker eventually went to Hayden Christensen, Spiderman went to DiCaprio’s friend and Gatsby co-star Tobey Maguire, and Robin went to Chris O’Donnell.
