Lucasfilm and breakfast restaurant Denny's are being sued by game-maker Sabacc, saying Lucasfilm used the card game in promotion for Solo: A Star Wars Story and it could cause “consumer confusion.”
Ren Ventures began selling a game called Sabacc and now have a trademark registered. Lucasfilm reportedly challenged the trademark, but Ren Ventures has been fighting with Lucasfilm to remove any mention of Sabacc from its marketing materials.
However, Denny's is also part of the lawsuit, after they released an advertisement for the new Star Wars movie that featured the card game modeled after Sabacc.
“Defendants’ unauthorized use of the term ‘Sabacc’ to refer to a playing-card game in a nationwide advertising campaign for an upcoming film is likely to cause consumer confusion as to the source and/or origin of Plaintiffs’ pre-existing playing-card game,” the lawsuit reads.
