According to the post announcing the album, the two albums were distinct yet complementary in their sound and meant to work together with the concept essentially being “Swimming In Circles”.

Miller was working with Jon Brion prior to his tragic passing. Afterward, Brion continued working on production for the album based on discussions they had while writing.

“After his passing, Jon dedicated himself to finishing Circles based on his time and conversations with Malcolm,” Miller’s family wrote. “We are so grateful to Jon and to those who gave their best to the difficult and emotional task of putting out this body of work.”

The family’s post highlights the difficulty with deciding how to announce the news and ultimately will not be making any further posts on Miller’s account about it.

“This is a complicated process that has no right answer. No clear path. We simply know that it was important to Malcolm for the world to hear it.”
