Watch MGK turn Shawn Mendes’ vocals into a beat for cathartic freestyle

Machine Gun Kelly is dropping his daily new music on fans and today he’s drawing inspiration from a surprising source in Canadian pop idol Shawn Mendes.

The rapper uses a sample of Mendes’ vocals for a main beat on his latest freestyle titled “Pretty Toxic Revolver” which also references Lil Peep.

Ever since the beginning of isolating himself at home due to coronavirus, Machine Gun Kelly has been dropping daily cover song videos which eventually expanded into freestyles too.

So far, he’s covered everything from a short but sweet cover of Paramore‘s “Misery Business,” a cover of Nirvana‘s classic “Smells Like Teen Spirit,”  Juice WRLD‘s “Lucid Dreams” and tons of other songs. He’s also given a cover of Avril Lavigne‘s “Sk8er Boi” and shared full performances of Paramore‘s “Misery Business” with Travis Barker as well as an Oasis cover of their track “Champagne Supernova” with YUNGBLUD.

Now, he’s back with a new Shawn Mendes-sampling freestyle. The new freestyle marks his 18th entry into his “Lockdown Sessions.”

In the new freestyle, he mentions the tragic overdosing of Lil Peep in a lyric. “Head hurting all week ’cause of bad coke/Then the same week Peep overdosed, that’s fucked up/But I guess I lucked up.

Beyond the daily cover videos and freestyles, MGK is still busy plugging away at his upcoming pop-punk album Tickets To My Downfall

The album still doesn’t have a firm release date but is expected this summer after being pushed off of its early 2020 release date.

Yesterday, we got a tease from rapper Iann Dior leading to us believing something new is arriving on April 17.

This comes after several teaser clips have arrived including a full band performance of an untitled song recently while MGK has given a playlist of songs inspiring the album.
