This horrifying pizza video is enough to break our pop-punk hearts

Happy National Pizza Day! Whether it’s thin crust, Chicago style, or pineapple (I’m judging you) that brings you joy, we’re celebrating all types of pizza pies on this glorious holiday. But one horrifying pizza video has surfaced that is so disgusting and painful to watch that our pop-punk hearts can hardly take it.

Published on February 6 by Science Magazine, this time-lapse video shows a delicious pizza being devoured by an army of maggots.

Yes, you read that right.

Researchers have been conducting studies using these creepy little creatures in hopes that the findings could help grub farmers.

“Some companies are collecting a bit of the 1.3 billion tons of food waste humans produce annually and feeding it to hordes of maggots,” says Science Magazine. “Once they’re plump on rotten leftovers, the larvae can be turned into high-protein food for animals such as chickens and fish that humans are more interested in eating.”

Using pizza for science? We’re totally on board with this.

The researchers claim that “better understanding the process could help grub farming companies scale up and turn even more food waste back into food.”

And in case you were wondering, it takes 10,000 maggots two hours to devour a delicious deep dish.

And apparently they are not fond of the crust either?
