Marilyn Manson buries the past in haunting “God's Gonna Cut You Down” cover

Leave it to Marilyn Manson to make a folk song even more haunting as the musician unleashed his cover of “God’s Gonna Cut You Down.” Paired with an equally unnerving video, Manson gives the track his own beloved dark spin.

The vocalist surprised dropped the take on the classic track that has been covered by everyone from Elvis Presley to Johnny Cash. “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” follows two other 2018 covers, “Cry Little Sister” and “Helter Skelter.”

Cry Little Sister” was first recorded by Gerard McMahon for The Lost Boys soundtrack, and Manson’s take also saw screentime. Released in June 2018, the song was originally intended to pair with the debut of X-Men film The New Mutants. Despite the film’s release continuously getting pushed, Manson maintained the plan to drop the single.

As for “Helter Skelter,” Manson recruited tourmate Rob Zombie to give their own spin on the Beatles track. While officially released on streaming services, the duo also performed the song live on the first date of their joint run, Twins Of Evil – The Second Coming.

Now, Manson has shared his third release since his tenth studio album, Heaven Upside Down, in 2017. He returned to work with producer Tyler Bates, who he teamed up with on Heaven Upside Down and the preceding 2015 release The Pale Emperor.

The dark imagery was captured by director Tim Mattia, who Manson previously teamed up with on “Hey Cruel World.” Mattia has also worked with the 1975 on several creations such as “A Change Of Heart,” “Robbers,” “The Sound” and “Somebody Else.” He’s also teamed up with twenty one pilots (“My Blood”), Halsey (“Colors”), the Killers (“The Man”) and Linkin Park (“Heavy”)—just to name a few.

More on Marilyn Manson

Manson has been keeping busy with several casting reveals such as American Gods as a death metal singer, an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand as not Randall Flagg and HBO’s The New Pope. But the vocalist hasn’t stepped away from music by any means.

He recently wrapped another leg of his co-headliner with Zombie where he officially added new drummer Brandon Pertzborn after Gil Sharone left the band at the end of March to pursue other projects.

He was also up to something with Poppy at the end of last year and confirmed he was working on something of his own shortly before Sharone’s departure. In mid-March, Manson took to Instagram to reveal we could be getting some new original music from him sooner than we think.

Manson provided fans with an update to his latest studio endeavors, writing, “On my way to @shooterjennings to finish my new album.” This isn’t the first time Manson has collaborated with Shooter Jennings. The two teamed up for a cover of David Bowie’s “Cat People” back in 2016.
