Fans could already tell from the thrilling trailer that the brutal factor was going up a notch. In the film, Dark Knight Rises alum Tom Hardy stars as investigative journalist Eddie Brock, who transforms into the the titular alien symbiote antihero.

Speaking at a recent Comic-Con panel, Venom director Ruben Fleischer specifically cautions there are “no heroes in this movie.” He says Marvel fans should expect a “much grittier, grounded, complicated character” in Hardy’s Brock/Venom.

Venom hits U.S. theaters Oct. 5, and the movie’s planned as the first part of Sony Pictures’ all-new Marvel Universe series. (The creative offshoot’s intended to expand as a separate film arm of the presently established Marvel Cinematic Universe.)
