There’s a lot going on in the Scream franchise right now due to the highly-awaited arrival of Scream 5.

Now, Matthew Lillard is revealing why he thinks Stu Macher might still be alive after all these years and the internet agrees.

Since the announcement of Scream 5 back in November, various original cast members have been confirmed for the new film.

Back in May, it was confirmed that David Arquette is reprising his role as Sheriff Dewey Riley for Scream 5. Shortly following this, Courteney Cox also joined the cast. Most recently, Neve Campbell was confirmed for the franchise’s new film earlier this week.

Lillard has previously expressed his desire to return for Scream 5. In an interview with TooFab, Lillard was asked if he was open to returning to the franchise.

“Yes, yes, I’m available, yes, yes,” he said. “There’s nobody that wouldn’t want to come back and reprise a role they got to do when they were a boy and be able to do something different as a man would be exciting. You just don’t get that opportunity often.”

Lillard’s character Stu Macher was seemingly killed off in the first film. However, eagle eyes and internet deep divers have always believed the character’s death was faked. Scream fans previously noticed Lillard in the background of a scene in Scream 2.

As well, he reportedly made an uncredited appearance in Scream 4 and was even written into the original Scream 3 script. However, the Scream 3 plot was rewritten following the Columbine shootings.

In wake of Campbell’s casting in Scream 5, Lillard addressed the ongoing theories and hinted at Stu Macher’s possible return.

In the original Scream film, Macher “dies” after being electrocuted by a TV. Now, Lillard thinks it’s possible he didn’t actually die from his injuries.

Since Scream 5 is set in the same universe as the previous films, is it possible Stu Macher could make a return? I guess we will have to wait and see for now.

This will be the first Scream film since 2011 and the death of original director Wes Craven in 2015. Production is set to happen in Wilmington, North Carolina when filming is safe to resume amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to this delay, Paramount and Spyglass anticipate that Scream 5 will be released worldwide on Jan. 14, 2022.

Alongside the original cast members, Scream 5 includes some new actors to the franchise. Jack Quaid, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega are all confirmed for the new film. Ortega is best known for her roles in Jane The Virgin and Netflix‘s You.

Plot details are still unknown but the story is being co-written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak are producing while longtime Scream mastermind Kevin Williamson is executive producing. Chad Villella is also executive producing.

Naturally, fans have a lot of theories and reactions about Scream 5 and Stu’s possible return.
