Matty Healy details "sort of" emo next The 1975 album

Fans have been eagerly awaiting news on the forthcoming fourth record from the 1975Notes On A Conditional Form. Fortunately, Matty Healy might have given us a small insight as to what we can expect from the upcoming album and the emo influence behind it.

ALT 949 sat down with Healy at Coachella to discuss releasing two albums in less than a year and what we can expect with the band’s fourth album.

A little over a month ago Healy did a Reddit AMA where a fan asked him if the new album would be emo, to which Healy replied “Sort of.”

When asked to elaborate on his answer, Healy dished the details.

“I’m an active emo man I suppose I’d call myself” Healy jokes before diving in to the influence and direction of the upcoming album.

“I think that bands when they get to a stage that maybe we’re in they wanna kind of graduate into being like a massive rock band whereas we wanna graduate like into being a small emo band, if you know what I mean.

It’s not like a where emo ended up sounding record like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy sounding record. There’s definite references to Joan Of Arc and Braid and Mineral… you hear a lot of that on No Rome’s new EP, it’s kind of like an emo record and I played drums on that and we were making that the same time we started Notes On A Conditional Form so it does have this kind of like, Midwest kind of sound to it.”

We’re intrigued.

Notes On A Conditional Form does not have a set release date yet, but Healy assures us that there will be a build up to it.

“I don’t even know if we’re going to put a single out first. I don’t know. We might just drop the whole record. I haven’t figured it out, but I don’t think that we need to figure it out. And I don’t think our fans or people in this world need that kind of stuff figured out. We’ll just do it when it feels right. But there will be a build up to it like there always is.”
