Matty Healy addresses misogyny in music following Ryan Adams allegations

At the 2019 BRIT Awards, the 1975’s Matty Healy used the time during his acceptance speech to address misogyny in music. Before taking home the award for Best British Group, Healy thought to address today’s bigger issues, specifically involving “male misogynist acts.”

Healy’s speech derives inspiration from a piece from the Guardian about the recent allegations regarding Ryan Adams. The quote Healy pulls highlights the dangerous double standard in relation to abuse and sexual assault.

“I just want you to listen to me for one sec, just a couple of sentences that a friend of ours, [journalist] Laura Snapes, said this, and I thought we should all really really think about it,” Healy says on stage at the BRITS. “She said that in music, ‘male misogynist acts are examined for nuance and examined as traits of difficult artists while women and those who call them out are treated as hysterics who don’t understand art.’”

Earlier today, Healy interacted with the article written by Snapes, saying her words were “Bang On.”

As stated before, the article follows the recent allegations against singer-songwriter Ryan Adams. Last week, a New York Times exposé gave women a platform to come forward about their alleged abusive relationships with the singer-songwriter. Many women came forward in the piece, including Phoebe Bridgers, ex-wife Mandy Moore and musician Courtney Jaye. The women cited abuse ranging from psychological manipulation to sexual misconduct.
