Matty Healy protests anti-LGBTQ laws in Dubai by kissing male fan at gig
The 1975 frontman Matty Healy acted in protest at a show in Dubai by kissing a male fan during a gig to protest the Arab state’s anti-LGBTQ laws.
In the United Arab Emirates, all sexual relations outside of heterosexual marriage are considered a crime. In Dubai specifically, you can be jailed up to 10 years for being gay.

Healy decided to defy this by leaving the stage during “Loving Someone” and kissing a male fan on the lips in the crowd. It’s reported that the fan had asked the singer to marry him prior to the kiss.
You can see a clip of it below.

After the show, Healy thanked fans and acknowledged the kiss.
“Thank you Dubai you were so amazing. I don’t think we’ll be allowed back due to my ‘behaviour’ but know that I love you and I wouldn’t have done anything differently given the chance again,” he wrote.
“But who knows maybe they will let me back in let’s just wait and see,” he added.

The band have previously been very outspoken about their support of LGBTQ rights. Back in 2017, the band released a special It Gets Better hoodie in partnership with the It Gets Better project, a movement geared towards LGBTQ youth.
The hoodie was themed around the same song, “Loving Someone”. Proceeds helped raise money for the organization with the mission of conveying “to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth around the world that it gets better, and to create and inspire the changes needed to make it better for them.”
