Back in 2017 Melanie Martinez revealed via a Billboard interview that her sophomore album would coincide with a movie.

“It’s all of the videos together of the next record, all thirteen, with dialogue and whatnot in between connecting all of them together. and I’m directing it and writing it and styling it and doing the makeup,” said Martinez.

Not much has been heard about the film/album project since, until now. Martinez took to Instagram to provide fans with an update and a tentative release date for her next project.

“Been dying to give you all an Album/Movie update but wanted to wait until I was sure the film would be done in time. The album has been done for like 2 years now I’ve just been waiting to finish up the movie. Some of you keep asking when singles are going to drop and the answer is they’re not. I’m putting out a concept album and an hour and a half long movie. Still has to go through VFX, Sound and Color for the next few months then a couple months of waiting and preparing that I have no control over. So it’s safe to say it’ll come out END OF SUMMER.

Sending love ? Can’t wait till you all can see/hear what I’ve been workin real hard on for the past 3 years!”

Martinez had incredbile success with her debut album. Cry Baby did tremendously well debuting at No. 1 on the Alternative Albums chart, No. 5 on the Top Albums chart and No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart. It was also certified platinum in March 2017 and was one of only eight debut albums released in 2015 to receive platinum certification.

The 13-track album eventually received a video for every song.

The thirteenth and final visual component to Martinez’s platinum certified album was for her track “Mad Hatter”. As with all of her previous videos, Martinez wrote, directed, and conceived the visual herself. Oh, and the costume designs in “Mad Hatter”? She was responsible for those too.

With such creativity, we can’t wait to see what Martinez has in store for her next project.
