Melanie Martinez has just dropped a new track titled “Copy Cat” that features Tierra Whack. The new song is also the first Martinez track to feature another artist. Whack received critical acclaim in 2018 for her debut studio album Whack World.

In addition to “Copy Cat,” Martinez also announced a substantial leg of dates for her K-12 world tour.

Melanie Martinez released her album and accompanying full-length film K-12 back in September. The album was widely acclaimed and debuted at No. 3 on Billboard 200.

Melanie Martinez was also the cover star, guest editor and photographer of the all-inclusive Melanie Martinez Issue 375 of Altpress.

Earlier this month, Martinez released a number of videos for songs from K-12 including “Teacher’s Pet,” “High School Sweethearts,” “Orange Juice” and “Detention.”

Speaking on her new track “Copy Cat,” Martinez compliments Whack and explains the process behind the song’s creation.

“I’m so thrilled to be releasing this song with the most magical artist and insanely gifted lyricist, Tierra Whack,” Martinez says. “This song was written years ago and from an empathetic perspective, even while in a very hurt place.”

“We’re all told that imitation is flattery to ease the pain that the ego feels when other people get credited for our ideas and our work. But being human includes feeling a multitude of feelings, and naturally this song came about when expressing those very raw emotions. I hope this song can not only bring comfort to anyone experiencing that feeling but also remind them to empathize with people who are just doing what society has conditioned them to believe will make them successful.”

Whack also praised Martinez and how she was chosen to feature on the song.

“She’s [Martinez] the sweetest, realest, most genuine person I’ve ever met,” Whack says.“After dropping ‘WHACK WORLD,’ she was one of the first people to reach out and immediately show love. So excited to share our new song together!”

“Copy Cat” Lyrics

Over my shoulder, eyes peeking in
Analyze my every move, what current state I’m in
‘Cause you are colder than ice on my skin
Wanna get that A+, baby, so you take my shit
‘Cause I am little, right? I won’t call you out
Teachers saying you’d get credit, why would you stop now?
You are so desperate craving that spotlight
Shining on the ones who do that shit ’cause it’s their life

But I know the people around you say
Just do what it takes to make it all the way

You’re the copy cat
You take it then you leave it, honey
Just like that, just like that
You’re falling flat
You find someone like me to bring you
Up right back, up right back
(Uh uh uh, uh uh, copy cat)
(Uh uh uh, uh uh, copy cat)

Obsessed with power, you want it for yourself
Feeding up misogyny but still you call yourself
A feminista, if that were really true
You wouldn’t feel as if I were a current threat to you

But I know the people around you say
Just do what it takes to make it all the way

You’re the copy cat
You take it then you leave it, honey
Just like that, just like that
You’re falling flat
You find someone like me to bring you
Up right back, up right back
(Uh uh uh, uh uh, copy cat)
(Uh uh uh, uh uh, copy cat)

Find someone else to leech on, lady
My blood’s for me, not for you, baby
College, estate and all your savings
My blood’s for me, so no more taking

Anything you can do, I can do better
In prison for stealing, gon’ write you a letter
Courageous and clever, creative director
I raised the bar higher, so I broke the record
I’m hot as peppers, my words written in leather
Scuffed up my boots while I stomp you in Skechers
They wanna build like their first name is Hector
Back against wall, bitch I am a projector
From the projects, don’t check on my ex
Like unibrows they are made for connects
Wish you the best, won’t show you my next
Move, so I guess you’ll be upset
Don’t cry, no baby, you’ll find your own way
Think for yourself, it will all be okay
Copyright lyrics, you can’t steal my spirit
They lift from my music, they’re dying to hear it

Imitated, never duplicated
You wish you related
You wish you’d have made it
Imitated, never duplicated
You wish you related
You wish you’d have made it
