MGK explains how he perfected Tommy Lee’s iconic drum stick twirl

Machine Gun Kelly recently revealed that while filming the Dirt, he spent over four months learning Mötley Crüe’s signature drum stick move. In a story with USA Today, MGK says that he garnered calluses on his hands just to learn how to twirl the drum sticks.

According to USA Today, the Cleveland rapper sought out the skills of his “younger brother,” for his role. However, MGK is likely referencing his drummer, Rook, whom he commonly references as blood, despite not being actually related.

“I had that damn drumstick in my hand for four months straight, dude,” MGK says. “I have giant calluses in between my middle finger and my index finger just spinning that damn stick. So I hope you enjoy the stick twirls in that movie.”

Additionally, in the interview, MGK says he was shocked by all of the things he had to learn and subject himself to for the role of Tommy Lee.

That said, the rapper says that being in his presence certainly helped him tackle the role.

Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx also says the band were very involved with the process. They worked as producers, making script adjustments and approving actors. He explains casting brought the actors to them to review, and each member had several choices. Sixx also revealed that MGK tried out to portray him as well and not just Lee.

“I didn’t know this, but at one point, Machine Gun Kelly was sort of trying out to be me. He is Tommy,” Sixx says. “When you see the film, it’s unbelievable. He has the same body and everything.”

Last month, MGK and Mötley Crüe dropped their collab track, “The Dirt (Est. 1981)” on Sex Pistols’ guitarist Steve Jones show “Jonesy’s Jukebox”.

The Dirt hits Netflix on March 22.
