Could there be a new 'Guitar Hero' game on the way?

Could another Guitar Hero game be in the works? Microsoft‘s $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard has prompted many people to wonder about the possibility.

Activision is responsible for a number of major gaming franchises. If there was any doubt their IP was of interest to their new owner, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has suggested there is interest in many of the company’s iconic franchises.

In a recent interview with the Washington Post, Spencer commented on some of the key properties: “I was looking at the IP list, I mean, let’s go! King’s Quest, Guitar Hero, … I should know this but I think they got HeXen. ”

Spencer also made it clear that Microsoft was thinking about how to bring back notable games from the Activision catalog.

“We’re hoping that we’ll be able to work with them when the deal closes to make sure we have resources to work on franchises that I love from my childhood, and that the teams really want to get,” Spencer says. “I’m looking forward to these conversations. I really think it’s about adding resources and increasing capability.”

Unfortunately, Spencer didn’t have any more to say about Guitar Hero specifically, but many are still hoping this could mean they’ll get another chance to play legendary songs in the future. The game originally launched in 2005, but we haven’t seen a new title since Guitar Hero Live in 2015.
