'Midsommar' will ruin festival season for you based on first trailer

We’ve been intrigued by Midsommar ever since Ari Aster, who freaked us out with Hereditary last year, called it a “Wizard Of Oz for perverts.”

We previously got a teaser video for the film, but the first full-length trailer is finally here to really horrify us.

Before the trailer, we knew that Aster’s second film focuses on a pagan cult, and that it was probably going to ruin festival season for us after we watched it.

The film, full of striking visuals and macabre elements, follows a couple that goes to Sweden for a festival that only happens once every 90 years. However, the festival turns dark and violent at the hands of a cult.

The trailer gives way more backstory to how the couple ended up at one of the more terrifying cult events ever. They are stuck in a place that never gets dark full of people who play some serious mind games that are a thing of nightmares.

Besides Aster’s strange comparison, he also spoke more about the film and how it compares to Hereditary.

“It’s a breakup movie, in the same way that Hereditary is a family tragedy,” Aster said. “It’s less overtly a horror movie, but it’s still working in that same space. … But people shouldn’t go in expecting Hereditary.”

The A24 film stars Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor. It will premiere in theaters on August 9. You can check out the film’s poster below.
