Morrissey biopic finds its Moz

He's the rock icon who told the world to “Sing Your Life” and now some British filmmakers are getting ready to film his life story.

British film, stage and television star Jack Lowden will play Steven Patrick Morrissey in an upcoming biopic, Deadline reports.

Mark Gill will make his feature film directorial debut with Steven, which promises to tell the story of Morrissey's life before the formation of the Smiths.

At least one of the film's producers is no stranger to rock biopics: Orian Williams was one of the producers of Control, the 2007 drama about the life of late Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis. Gill cowrote the script with William Thacker. The pair previously worked together on The Voorman Problem, a 2014 short-film which earned an Oscar nomination. Lowden is an Olivier Award-winning actor, most recently seen in the BBC's War And Peace

Morrissey released an in-depth account of his life in the appropriately titled Autobiography back in 2013. As far as anyone can tell thus far, Steven is not an authorized biopic.

When news of the film's development hit the Hollywood trades in 2014, Gill told the BBC, “I can't deny that this is a love letter to Steven Patrick Morrissey and the dark satanic mills of Manchester.”

Gill was born in Manchester so perhaps Moz will cut him a little bit of slack.
