Mötley Crüe pay homage to Metallica in "Like A Virgin" cover
The hype behind the Mötley Crüe biopic The Dirt, which stars Machine Gun Kelly as drummer Tommy Lee, has only continued to build after the release of “The Dirt (Est. 1981)” yesterday. The track marked the first of four songs featured on the soundtrack to the biopic. Strangely enough, one of those tracks is a Mötley Crüe cover of Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” which bassist Nikki Sixx says gives a “nod” to Metallica.

Sixx sat down with Billboard to discuss how the cover came about, revealing that at first, he thought it was “actually a really horrible idea.”
The idea to tackle the Madonna track came to Sixx while he was taking a stroll with his dogs, something he does daily as part of his meditative practice.
“When my mind’s open like that, these ideas pop in,” he tells Billboard. “And [it] popped in my head, and I sort of like looked up, as if to laugh at God, and went, ‘You’re pretty funny.’”
The band’s producer, Bob Rock, wasn’t on board for the cover either considering when Sixx brought up the idea he replied with “Yeah, I don’t know. Good luck!”
But after the Mötley Crüe bassist showed Tommy Lee and Rock the demo he had cut for the track, their tunes changed.
While the lyrics to the cover have remained unchanged, the instrumentals have been given a makeover.
There’s a part in the track that “does this little gahnk-guh-guh-guh-guh-guh-gahnk that Mick does, a bit of a nod to Metallica because [when] Metallica heard the Dr. Feelgoodalbum, [they] used Bob Rock to make the Black Album,” says Sixx. “It’s kind of a nod back to those guys because we were workin’ with Bob again.”
Is Madonna aware of this Mötley makeover “Like A Virgin” has been given?
“I don’t know. She will soon, I imagine,” Sixx says. “Maybe we can get her in the video.”

Earlier this month, we received word that the rapper would be joining the rock icons for a collab track for the film, and it’s finally here.
“The Dirt (Est. 1981)” premiered on Sex Pistols’ guitarist Steve Jones show “Jonesy’s Jukebox” Thursday afternoon, but the collab finally became available online yesterday.
Earlier this month, Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx teased the matchup in a Twitter Q&A after a fan asked if it existed. Sixx revealed the news, saying, “Yes. New song with MGK is coming really soon. We wrote the song for #TheDirtMovie”
The band released “All Bad Things” in 2015, marking their final single ahead of their last tour. Sixx continues on to explain he had about eight tracks he had been working on that weren’t necessarily meant for the band, including some with John 5.
“I had these ideas, and Tommy said he had a bunch of ideas and Mick Mars had some ideas, and we kind of just started putting them together. We ended up with nine songs all called ‘The Dirt.’”
They eventually narrowed it down to three songs, and they chose this one as the first single where “the lyrics explain it all.” Sixx revealed there will be three other new tracks coming out at a later date, which, according to the soundtrack announcement, will include “Ride With The Devil,” “Crash And Burn” and “Like A Virgin.”
