Netflix co-founder wants to get you into movies for cheap, AMC threatens to sue

If you’ve ever been hesitant to go to a movie due to the cost, MoviePass is here to attempt to change that: It would be a subscription fee of $9.95 per month, letting people see one movie every day of the month.

Sounds like a dream, right?

Well, AMC isn’t on board—saying it’s not “in the best interest of moviegoers, movie theatres and movie studios,” Variety reports.

Founder Mitch Lowe says the service will have blackout dates or contracts—instead, it’s about getting customers out to the theaters in the first place.

“This is about getting funded in order to launch our new price point,” Lowe told Variety. “After years of studying and analysis we found that people want to go to the movies more often, but the pricing keeps going up, and that prevents them from going more. We’re making it more affordable for people.”

They explain that the new subscription will not include tickets for 3D or IMAX showings, but it would be available in over 91% of all theaters—including AMC, Regal and Cinemark theaters, along with other independent theaters, Variety reports.

Of course, AMC Theaters are upset—and threatening legal action. Variety explains that the theater's stock has been suffering, and they’re worried both that the subscription would confuse customers and hurt their own loyalty programs that they’ve invested so much in.

At the present, AMC told Variety that it’s consulting with its attorneys to determine if it can prevent MoviePass from being used at its locations.
