MTV reviving ‘Celebrity Deathmatch’ with Ice Cube starring

MTV is all about the nostalgia lately, announcing plans to bring back some more classic programming.

The network brought back TRL in October 2017 before facing a programming change earlier this year. Jersey Shore also returned this year after a nearly six-year hiatus as the group reunited for Jersey Shore: Family Vacation. The Hills: Beginnings is also set to air next year. However, they’re not the only ones.

In June, the network revealed it was working to bring back Daria. Then in November, Spring Break was looking at a revival. Now, it looks like stop-motion animated series Celebrity Deathmatch is up next.

Variety revealed the news today, stating MTV Studios is bringing back the series with creator Eric Fogel returning as an executive producer. Ice Cube will also be joining the series to produce and to star.

“We’re excited to grow our partnership with Ice Cube and Cube Vision to reimagine this fan favorite,” says Chris McCarthy, president of MTV, VH1 and CMT. “Deathmatch was the meme before memes, remains a hot topic on social media and will be a smart, funny way to tackle the over-the-top rhetoric of today’s pop culture where it belongs—in the wrestling ring.”

Celebrity Deathmatch originally aired on MTV from 1998 to 2001, parodying celebrity face-offs as animated versions of them wrestled. MTV2 relaunched the series from 2006 to 2007.

Some match highlights include the Spice Girls vs. Hanson, Marilyn Manson vs. Ricky Martin, Courtney Love vs. Dave Grohl and Billy Corgan, KISS vs. NSYNC, Ozzy Osbourne vs. Rob Zombie and many, many more.

The series reboot will be released weekly on an SVOD (or subscription video on demand such as Netflix or Hulu) or other network partner in 2019. Further details are not available at this time.
