MTV is trying to find a way to safely host a live Video Music Awards show
If you’ve been wondering what is going to happen to the MTV Video Music Awards amid the coronavirus pandemic, the answer is that they might be hosting the awards show live this summer.
As first reported by Variety, MTV is exploring options for a live award show in New York City this summer but according to Billboard, they’re making contingency plans too in case it isn’t possible.

In Variety‘s report, they say the company is exploring options with local health authorities on whether or not it would be possible to host a live awards show in August.
“We’re exploring with government officials, the medical community, and key stakeholders on how to safely hold the 2020 VMAs at Barclays Center on August 30th,” a spokesperson told Billboard in a statement. “The health of everyone involved remains our number one priority. Additionally, we are working on several contingency plans to bring music’s biggest night to audiences everywhere.”
If the event were to be held at Barclays, it would mark a return to the venue for the first time since 2013.
The company is putting safety first though and have other plans if a live show isn’t possible. They’re also looking into virtual performances as well as a show with no audience among other plans.
MTV gave save the date notices to agents and talent representatives this week indicating they’re plans for normal programming.
Organizers are keeping a close eye on other award show plans including the Academy Awards and the Emmys.
Talks of the Oscars being postponed have been going around while the BET Awards are going virtual. The June 28 BET Awards show will have guests appear using “innovative techniques and artist-generated content,” as reported by Variety.
Currently, New York City is still the hardest hit places for the virus in the US. As of today, over 200,000 cases have been confirmed in the city with nearly 30,000 deaths in the state.
