TRL isn't canceled—it's actually expanding

Rumors surfaced that TRL was getting canceled after its return last fall, but it turns out that's not the case.

In fact, they're dedicating more airtime to the show.

TMZ originally reported that the MTV show was canceled once again, after being revived last October.

However, MTV president Chris McCarthy denied the report, revealing that the network actually had plans to expand the franchise by this summer.

“It’s thriving. We’re expanding the franchise and will have three TRLs by summer,” McCarthy shared, Consequence Of Sound reports. “TRL has delivered incredible growth on linear and we’ve experienced two to three times the growth in our video streams and TRL is big piece of it—and that’s why we’re expanding it; we want more.”

Billboard details the show's expansion, saying when the afternoon show returns April 9, it will be targeted toward the 12-24 age group where it's seen the most success. The half-hour late night show, Total Request Late, will expand to four nights a week, targeting the 18-34 demographic.

Plus, the new morning show in development, currently being dubbed Total Request A.M., is going to be a “pure one-hour music block that'll be almost a visualization of your playlist, as well as performances and interviews,” McCarthy explains. (He describes it as The Today Show “but through a music filter.”)

It all sounds great—we'll have to see how the newly-expanded TRL performs. (And let's see more from 5SOS, please.)
