Buddy Nielsen recalls witnessing My Chemical Romance’s turning point

It’s crazy to think that My Chemical Romance has officially been around since 2001. That’s nearly 20 years. Given that wild fact, it only makes sense that Gerard Way and the gang would tour with a lot of bands and see a lot of people. James “Buddy” Nielsen of Senses Fail just shared one of those wonderful moments.

The picture is of Buddy and Way back in 2004 grinning ear to ear one month after Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge came out.

In a touching Instagram post, Buddy posted a picture describing a time when My Chemical Romance weren’t the biggest band in the world. Now, thousands of fans immediately sold out their reunion show. Tens of thousands have watched videos showing the set. The world cannot get enough of my Chemical Romance. But, it wasn’t always that way.

Gerard of @mychemicalromance and I at Toad’s Place New Haven, CT summer 2004. Three Cheers had come out a month before. We both played half of @vanswarpedtour and jumped in a bus to tour home. The shows were mostly at 300 cap clubs and below and everyday we’d show up there would be a massive line already around the block. It was so amazing to be with them at such an monumental time in their career. They would go on to become the biggest band in the world and it was really just so special to see them realize that everything they ever wanted was happening right at that time. This was the last show of tour and the next time I saw them, a couple weeks later they were on TRL. The rest is history.

This is such a cool look into the past of My Chemical Romance and Senses Fail. Both bands became incredibly successful in their own right.

More My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance fans are a savvy bunch. From a phenomenal video project to deciphering symbolism from clothing, there isn’t a lot the MCRrmy can’t do. Now, one My Chemical Romance fan pieced together the puzzle of the backdrop that was displayed during the reunion show.

The statue is known as the Angel of the Waters. It sits atop the Bethesda Fountain in New York City. The statue is also an incredibly important LGBTQ site. Get more details below.

Lesbian sculptor Emma Stebbins created The Angel of the Waters statue in 1873. Incredibly, it is the earliest public artwork by a woman in New York City.  Stebbins designed the statue to celebrate the new Croton Aqueduct. This new aqueduct not only fed the fountain, but also supplied fresh water to the city.

The statue is also featured in a prominent scene in Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, in addition to being created by a masterful lesbian sculptor. Angels in America has won numerous awards including Tony’s and a Pulitzer Prize for its complex and symbolic depiction of AIDS and homosexuality in America in the 1980s.

This is such a super cool, small detail that could potentially mean a lot to a vast number of people. We hope more My Chemical Romance fans get on the case to uncover every secret they’re up to, now that this has been uncovered. The Angel of the Waters is in the Bethesda Terrace and Fountain. It overlooks The Lake in NYC’s Central Park.
