The film is an adaptation of the graphic novel My Friend Dahmer by John “Derf” Backderf, which was released in 2012. The author was friends with the soon-to-be serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer when they were teenagers back in Ohio, according to Rolling Stone.

The film features Disney Channel star Ross Lynch, who tells the music source that he had never heard of Dahmer before auditioning for—and then landing—the role.

“They were like, 'Hey, do you know who Jeffrey Dahmer is?' I had no idea,” Lynch told Rolling Stone. “I thought it was awesome to just be unpredictable. Hopefully my next role could be something that most people won't expect from me.”

As the trailer's description explains, Dahmer was an awkward teenager struggling to make it through high school. His antics win over a group of band folks who form The Dahmer Fan Club, with the movie following his spiral into madness.

Dahmer murdered 17 men and boys in the Midwest United States between 1978 and 1991 before being captured and incarcerated. He would become one of America’s most infamous serial killers.

My Friend Dahmer is “the story before that story.”
