For those unfamiliar with the NFPB, the board selects a number of films each year that they have deemed to be “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

With those films on the list, those that are added will be preserved under the National Film Preservation Act, which ensures the survival and conservation of these films.

In a statement made to Indiewire, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden said:

“The National Film Registry turns 30 this year and for those three decades, we have been recognizing, celebrating, and preserving this distinctive medium,” Hayden said. “These cinematic treasures must be protected because they document our history, culture, hopes, and dreams.”
