Scared neighbor calls police on Halloween decoration

A Halloween lover in West Fargo, North Dakota had quite a shock when returning home from a birthday dinner this week.

Becky Muhrs, who reveals Halloween has been her favorite holiday since birth and is even her wedding anniversary, got busy putting up some decorations early last weekend. Innocent enough, one would think, but her decor soon caused a panic among neighbors, according to WDAY.

The first thing to go up was a window decal that made it appear as if “Help Me” was written in blood. Once added, Muhrs left for dinner.

Neighbor Jay Thomas saw the decal and quickly became concerned.

“I look across the street, and I see in my neighbor’s window, the sign that says help me,” Thomas tells WDAY. “That window has always had the curtains drawn, so I’m like, ‘what’s going on in here?’”

Thomas saw a cop car parked on their street, so he tried to get assistance but claims the cop shooed him away. He says he felt “something’s not right,” so he tried to reach Muhrs but she didn’t reply.

Muhrs says was unaware of the issue it caused until she was headed home and was receiving messages asking if she was OK.

“I didn’t answer and 15 minutes later, [Thomas] is like, ‘Are you okay, are you okay, are you at home?’ Muhrs explains. “And then I said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘A sign, you have a sign on your window, help me.’”

Having not heard from her, Thomas did end up dialing 911. He explains his decision by saying, “To my defense, there were no other Halloween decorations out there.”

The officer who responded told Muhrs misunderstandings caused by Halloween decorations happens all of the time. The officer did not ask them to remove it, according to WDAY.
